BIOGRAPHY
Tim
May is a world-class guitarist, resophonic guitarist, and mandolinist
who started out playing banjo in the family band growing up in
Mississippi. Hearing Tony Rice and Dan Crary made a flat-picking
guitarist convert out of him in a big way, and Tim has spent years
exploring and pushing his craft.
He
recently toured Japan with JOHN COWAN and has performed with PATTY
LOVELESS, CHARLIE DANIELS, and EDDIE RABBIT promoting their CD
projects, performed as a regular on the Grand Ole Opry in the Mike
Snider Band, and recorded with CHARLIE DANIELS. Tim was the solo
guitarist on "I'll Fly Away" (from Charlie Daniels' "Songs From the
Long-Leaf Pines" album), a song nominated for a Grammy for Country
Instrumental of the Year in 2005. He was one of the central performers
and the primary chartist for the "Moody Bluegrass" project that married
the best bluegrass instrumentalists and singers with classic Moody
Blues music. He's an accomplished songwriter and singer as well, as
evidenced by his new solo CD, "Find My Way Back.".
Tim
has been a featured artist and writer for Flatpicking Guitar Magazine
and has regularly judged the National Flatpicking Guitar Championship
in Winfield, Kansas. He is a popular teacher at workshops across the
country, and is - with fiddling wife Gretchen Priest-May - a central
figure in the group PlaidGrass. Prior to that, he spent nearly 15 years
in the critically acclaimed group, Crucial Smith, which had a CD
produced by PAT FLYNN.
Tim's
songs "Father Time" and "King of Babylon" appear on Pat Flynn's latest
CD, reVision.
Tim is currently working as part of a band called PLAIDGRASS, which
plays interesting mix of Irish, Scottish, Old Time and Bluegrass tunes

instrumentalists. His old Crucial Smith bandmates, Kyle Wood
(mandolin), Chris Joslin (Dobro, banjo), Gretchen Priest-May (fiddle),
and Dave Holliday (bass) are on board to provide their instrumental
talents and vocal harmonies. Additionally, some of Tim's other
Nashville picking buddies led a hand on a song or two. |

On
December 18th, 2004 three of today’s most talented flatpicking guitar
players Brad Davis, Tim May, and Cody Kilby got together and performed
a concert near Kansas City, Kansas, and Flatpicking Guitar Magazine had
cameras rolling.
On that night
at Jim Curley's Mountain Music Shoppe in Shawnee, Kansas, the crowd was
not only treated to some amazing guitar work, but these talented
musicians also put on an awesome multi-instrument, singing, and
songwriting display. The three perform as a trio, pair up in various
duo configurations, and perform solo. Each artist brings some of his
original material to the stage, but they also get together to tear up a
few standard flatpicking numbers. It is something you don’t want to
miss!
