Flatpicking Favorites: Hot & Spicy!
Released in late September 2003, a hot album of great players performing flatpicking duets on standard fiddle tunes. Designed to raise the bar for flatpickers, the idea for the CD came from requests from readers and folks stopping by the FGM booth at bluegrass festivals: "Do you have anything that's just 'hot' flatpicking instrumentals?"

Well, we really didn't, but we knew the idea was possible. The first recording for this session included David Grier, Bryan Sutton, Jim Hurst, Brad Davis, Cody Kilby, and Tim May. I asked them to play standard jam session fiddle tunes "hot and fast." The guitarists teamed up into duets and selected tunes, but rather than playing the same old tunes the same old way they played the tunes both "hot" and "spicy."

We asked all the other guitarists involved in this project to continue in the "...make it hot, but also spice it up a bit...do something different" vein. The results are simply amazing. The CD has 16 cuts, all instruments: Wheel Hoss, Gold Rush, Farewell Blues, Lonesome Fiddle Blues, Back Up and Push, Forked Deer, Arkansas Traveler, Flop-Eared Mule, Cattle In The Cane, Cherokee Shuffle, Big Sandy River, Bill Cheathum, Salt Creek, Panhandle Rag, Lonesome Reuben, and Leather Britches. But you've never heard these tunes done quite this way!

Included in the stellar collection of flatpickers are David Grier, Bryan Sutton, Jim Hurst, Brad Davis, Cody Kilby, Tim May, Scott Nygaard, Jim Nunally, Gary Cook, Mike Maddus, Mark Cosgrove, Kenny Smith, Robin Kessinger, Steve Kaufman, Roy Curry, Scott Fore, Andy Falco, Bull Harman, Cecil Tinnon, Chris Eldridge, Tim Stafford, Wyatt Rice, and Larry Keel. That's seven Winfield winners and four IBMA Guitar Player of the Year recipients.
